Villagers placed on yellow alert over plan for parking restrictions in East Renfrewshire

DOUBLE yellow lines could be introduced in several areas of Neilston if parking plans are given the green light.

Residents are being urged to have their say on East Renfrewshire Council’s draft proposals to increase parking enforcement at eight locations in the village.

Areas that will be affected include Broadlie Road and Main Street, outside St Thomas’ Primary School and Neilston Old Parish Church; Kingston Road, leading on to High Street and Duncarnock Crescent; Chapel Place and Bank Street; Holehouse Brae; and roads surrounding Lintmill Terrace, Orr Terrace, Alexander Terrace, Molendinar Terrace and the adjoining Main Street.

Other stretches of Main Street, Kingston Road and Kirktonfield Road are also set to get double yellow lines.

If approved, the proposals would see new parking restrictions put in place.

Council chiefs have said no decision has been made on the proposed restrictions at this stage and any feedback, whether to state support or objection to the proposals or to suggest additional or alternative restrictions, will help to shape a formal consultation that will be held early next year.

Neilston resident John Scott said people there are “fed up” with the current state of parking and “something needs done” to improve enforcement.

He added: “The parking restrictions are obviously going to annoy some people but parking in the village is an ever-increasing problem.

“If people were sensible and considerate, we wouldn’t need these restrictions, which are designed not to annoy vehicle owners but to make the roads safer for pedestrians, motorists and emergency services.”

Mr Scott, a former secretary of Neilston Community Council, added: “Unless the restrictions are policed and enforced, it’s all going to be a waste of effort and money.”

The informal consultation runs until Friday, January 24, although comments received up until the start of the formal consultation will still be accepted.
