East Renfrewshire Council tax rise goes ahead as planned

A HIKE in council tax for East Renfrewshire residents has gone ahead, despite difficulties being faced by many families as the coronavirus crisis takes its toll.

In February, East Renfrewshire Council agreed budget plans that saw bills go up by almost five per cent from yesterday.

The increase of 4.84 per cent is the maximum permitted by the Scottish Government and represents a hike of £60 for those living in ‘Band D’ households, whose annual bill will now be £1,290.

Council chiefs confirmed the planned increase has gone ahead and there will be no change as to how and when money is collected.

However, provisions have been made to support those who are in financial difficulty.

A spokesperson for East Renfrewshire Council told the Barrhead News: “During these extremely unprecedented times, the council is committed to supporting our residents as much as we can.

“In line with national guidance, council tax collection will continue and we appreciate your support with this.

“We are aware of the significant financial pressure this unprecedented situation is placing on individuals and businesses.

Additional resources have been put in place to support processing of Scottish Welfare Fund applications, whilst additional measures are also in place to process council tax reductions for those who are now eligible.

“We encourage anyone who needs to discuss their financial situation to get in touch with us.”

Anyone who is struggling to pay their council tax bill is encouraged to call the Scottish Welfare Fund’s helpline on 0141 577 3475 to discuss their options.

If you are looking for some guidance on budgeting or applying for benefits, contact the freephone line operated by East Renfrewshire’s Money Advice and Rights Team, which can be reached on 0800 052 1023.

People can pay their council tax in monthly instalments or over a year and the charges cover the period from today until March 31, 2021.
