At least OUR government are trying to do something about the abuse of alchohol in scotland , the opposition do not seem to have any ideas among them. Labour in England are in favour of this move but up here they are against. Is this just to object to anything the SNP put forward, does not bode well for ERC junta. Tories take note an opportunity, or are you feart to upset someone?

Alan, remember the lessons of prohibition. Black markets are created by the stupidity of politicians trying to do something. That something is always meddling with market forces.

Alan, yes they are trying to do something, but it's the wrong thing. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. What I see here is a structural problem in the Scottish Government. Their raison d'etre is independence and therefore anyone who does not share that view must, by definition, be trying to undermine them and their core belief - so they don't listen even when they're getting good advice on subjects completely unrelated to the independence argument.

It could be argued that all policies are interlinked so they do lead to the independence argument. But, when a policy is in the formulation stage it is not interlinked so debate can take place on the basis of that exclusive policy and as the First Minister has said himself, the SNP 'don't have the monopoly on wisdom'. Perhaps he should start heeding his own advice.
