Barrhead: Fuming residents order selfish fly-tippers to clean up their act

By Pippa Smith Reporter

ANGRY residents have hit out at selfish fly-tippers who are turning Barrhead into an “eyesore.”

Among the areas to be targeted by dumb dumpers is Gateside, where household waste, bricks and even a lawnmower were ditched.

There are concerns that the problem has grown worse during the Covid pandemic as some people are too lazy to book a slot at one of East Renfrewshire’s recycling centres.

Barrhead woman Lorraine Griffiths told how she was left fuming after seeing waste piled on Gateside Road, leading to Neilston.

She told the Barrhead News: “I came up against this pile of rubbish when I was driving to work. It is absolutely shocking.

“The road is bad enough without having to navigate around someone’s disregard for the community and environment.

“There was a lawnmower, bags of rubbish and bits of wood. It looked like someone just couldn’t be bothered going to the dump, which is literally down the road.

“There are farm animals and wild animals around about the area which could easily have been hurt by this. It’s just not on.”

Earlier this year, the Barrhead News told how fly-tippers dumped more than 30 tyres at the side of a grassy verge which lines Fereneze Road, with some of them spilling on to the tarmac.

Those caught illegally dumping rubbish are committing a criminal offence and risk being fined up to £10,000. They could also face up to six months in prison.

A spokeswoman for East Renfrewshire Council said it has now cleared the rubbish from Gateside Road. She also stressed that everyone in the community has a part to play in tackling the problem.

“Fly-tipping is a blight on our community and we’d encourage residents to report any incidents via our website or by calling our free, confidential Ring and Report hotline on 0800 013 0076,” added the spokeswoman.

The Council Anticipate and Expect Fly-tipping to take place.

The Council have a unit within the £500,000.00 Mixed Tenure Contract to deal with this.
