Opinions needed to breathe new life into Dunterlie Centre

By William Brown Reporter

Barrhead residents are being urged to have their say on plans to develop the Dunterlie area of town.

East Renfrewshire Council has drawn up proposals to revamp the Dunterlie Resource Centre and multi-use games area (MUGA).

A previous consultation on the future of Dunterlie highlighted that residents and visitors to the area considered the resource centre as a valuable local asset, so it is proposed that the council uses a space there as an employability hub.

This would be supported by the council’s employability team, Work EastRen, to help the local community get into work and access training, as well as providing free WiFi within the centre.

In addition, there are four proposals set out for the MUGA which look to bring the facility back into community use, with both short and long-term options.

Councillor Tony Buchanan, leader of East Renfrewshire Council, told the Barrhead News: “This is an exciting opportunity for the local community of Dunterlie.

“The proposed new employability suite will allow our council’s employability team Work EastRen and other partners to help our local residents get the skills they need to get into work.

“The team help people of all ages and backgrounds to get ready for and find work.”

Councillor Colm Merrick, East Renfrewshire’s community services and community safety convener, added: “Dunterlie has an active and engaged community and they see the centre as a key asset for the area.

“Developing the MUGA will provide the area with a fantastic facility but any redevelopment has to have the support of this community and it is important that the voices of the whole area are heard and listened to when decisions are made.

“I would encourage everyone to have a look at the proposals and submit their views.”

As well as online surveys, the council will be seeking the views of groups, young people, families and tenants through face-to-face work in the community as Covid–19 restrictions allow.
