East Renfrewshire: Public consultation on local action plan

12th May

By William Brown
Reporter

People across East Renfrewshire are being urged to have their say on ways to transform local neighbourhoods.

East Renfrewshire Council has launched a series of public consultations to help develop Local Actions Plans which aim to create a bright future for the area.

Over the next five years, the UK and Scottish governments are providing capital regeneration funding for town centres and neighbourhoods across the country – and the council’s economic development team want to make sure East Renfrewshire does not miss out.

The Local Action Plans will help to identify and develop projects that could be delivered when funding is available.

As well as seeking views from local residents, council chiefs will hold talks with the likes of business groups and the East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure Trust in an effort to make the area's towns and neighbourhoods "more active, attractive and accessible."

Funding may be available for projects such as upgrading town centre public realm and green spaces, making better use of land and existing buildings, shopfront improvement schemes, improved digital connectivity and developing active travel opportunities.

An East Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “Investing in infrastructure has the potential to improve lives by giving people pride in their local town centres and neighbourhoods.

"It also demonstrates that we are committed to delivering the diverse needs of all places and all geographies in East Renfrewshire.

"Our local communities are a fundamental part of our shared economy, culture and society, so we’d encourage everyone who can to submit their views on what they’d like to see happen in their area.”

Online consultations for Barrhead, Neilston, Newton Mearns, Thornliebank and Busby are now underway at

These will be followed later in the year by consultations for Clarkston, Eaglesham, Giffnock, Netherlee and Williamwood.

Residents can also visit Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire’s market places to have their say.

Between now and June 20, drop-in sessions are taking place at

56 Kelburn Street, Barrhead, from 10am until 4pm on Mondays to Fridays and

The Avenue Shopping Centre, Newton Mearns, from 10am until 3pm on Mondays to Thursdays.

Alternatively, visit the Neilston Development Trust base at The Bank community hub in the village's Main Street.
