New £56m Giffnock leisure centre gets the green light
3 hrs ago

By Gillian McPherson
Reporter

Planning permission has been granted for a new £56 million leisure centre and theatre.

The new complex at Eastwood Park in Giffnock will feature an eight-lane swimming pool, learner pool, a fitness suite and three fitness studios, as well as a four-court games hall.

The “much-improved and larger theatre” will be complemented by a smaller studio theatre and bar.

The new facilities are expected to open to the public in the second half of 2027 and the existing leisure centre and theatre will be demolished following this.

A spokesperson for East Renfrewshire Council said: “This is a significant milestone in our plans to replace facilities which are more than 40 years old and no longer fit for purpose.

“The council is committed to delivering a new leisure centre and theatre to provide much-improved amenities for local residents for generations to come.”

The facility will be built alongside the existing leisure centre in Eastwood Park so residents will still have access to the amenities during construction of the new complex.

Councillors on the Planning Applications Committee (PAC) unanimously approved the proposals at a meeting on Wednesday, February 12.

Work on the new complex is due to begin later this year, though some preliminary work will be required before then.

The council says it will "continue to engage with key stakeholders ahead of the main building work."

Subject: Recording - freeze/no audio - Planning Applications Committee - 13 February 2025

Hi John

Recording - freeze/no audio - Planning Applications Committee - 13 February 2025

At 27:40 the recording would appear to freeze with no audio until 28:16 and then again freeze from 28:44 until 29:20 with no audio.

Again at 29:44 to 30:04 freeze with no audio.

Again at

41:13 to 41:41

42:50 to 43:09

freeze with no audio.

Would appreciate if you could give reasons for these breaks, why they occured and who was responsible for the problems.

Would appreciate if you would say how you intend to stop these problems occuring in future planning meetings.

Your help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Having reviewed the video, I can confirm that the recording itself does not freeze during the time stamps you have indicated.

It appears that during those periods, a member or officer was talking without their microphone switched on.

It is unfortunate that this has occurred, and we do advise members and officers to ensure they have their microphone switched on when speaking prior to the commencement of the meeting.

We will continue to advise members and officers to do this in future meetings.

Kind regards
